Opera Make Your Browser Fly

Techkriti at IIT-Kanpur

Last week, Navjot, Vivek and I went to Kanpur to attend Techkriti, the technical festival organized by the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur. We went there as sponsors of an online treasure hunt called ‘Tesseract’, which was organized there.

When we set up our stall in the campus, we were greeted by sunshine and a cool breeze. We ended up getting a huge avalanche of poeple lining up to know more about Opera, our products and of course, our super-cool t-shirts. Students from all over the country had come to the event, and we had a nice time interacting with them. Some of them were new to Opera, and some were die-hard opera fans loyal to us for many years. Some even told us that they will go back to their college, and spread the word about Opera. Way to go!

We also attended a talk given by Kevin Warwick, and later on strolled into a FOSS camp being held nearby. The guys over there were a pretty talented and enthusiastic bunch. Later on we were invited to judge the software programming contest happening nearby. Some of the stuff that we saw at the contest was pretty cool and it was encouraging to see young students trying out innovative solutions to real world problems.

Down below are the pics taken while we were there.

  • Continuous Integration: Team Testing

As you know, Continuous Integration is a set of simple practices that reduces software integration time and problems. It also improves general software quality with little overhead. Just having a testrun per every commit is quite handy for two reasons: early regression finding and easier debugging.

One of the most important virtues of CI is giving the tests a "social dimension". Martin Fowler's "Everyone can see what's happening" is actually one of the most powerful, yet subtle virtues of Continuous Integration. Letting everyone know about the status of the tests is not about assigning blame when something fails, it's about making the tests part of the development process Lost and Delirious on dvd Choke movies
    The Secret of NIMH divx
. We wholeheartedly agree with the vision of automated tests that are incorporated upstream into the development process and run on a continuous basis
    First Sunday
    .

What happens when you make the tests part of the process? Several interesting things:

    • The team focuses on avoiding and fixing regressions due to clear and quick feedback - less "getting out of the door quickly" with more stability.
    • The team has confidence in the code - more refactoring or rewriting of suboptimal modules.
    • Certain processes like deployment are streamlined - easier, clearer and more reliable.

      The Incredible Melting Man dvd

We feel that these benefits make Continuous Integration a natural extension to automated tests for development teams, a bit like "the version control system of tests". Here at Opera we are using Continuous Integration for selected server-side projects, notably the Opera Link server and My Opera . It has had a huge and positive impact on both of these projects, providing a crucial role when refactoring and improving code.

If you are not using Continuous Integration in your project yet, you should start now!

  • The day finally arrives

The first beta of Opera Mobile 9.5 is finally available for you to download. This will be the first in a series of betas for Opera Mobile 9.5. It is designed for Windows Mobile 5 and 6 phones with touchscreens.

The market has undergone a series of dramatic changes since our last major Opera Mobile upgrade. Apple entered the mobile browser market with Safari on the iPhone. Mozilla announced it will release a version of Firefox Mobile later this year and many other players are releasing browsers targeted for smartphones.

We have some fierce competition, but we are determined to keep Opera Mobile as the standard in Web browsing on smartphones. To achieve this, we need your help more than ever. Please file bugs and give us feedback in the forums and even feature requests. Our development team is active on the My Opera forums and will answer questions and do their best to help you out as you put the beta through its paces.

As I write this, I’ve just left for a much-needed vacation. I expect a long list of bugs and feature-requests to be waiting for me when I get back. After I return, we’ll get back to our regular programming with updates on the roadmap and subsequent betas.

    Happy bug-hunting!

Edit: Head over to dev.opera.com to read more about the browser from a developer angle or to find out how to use Dragonfly with this beta.

Edit2: This beta will only work on touchscreen-based windows mobile devices. We are planning to add compatibility for non-touchscreen phones in the future.

Edit3: Main testing has been done on English HTC devices (Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Touch, Touch Dual, Touch Cruise, TyTN and Wizard) and Samsung i900.

  • Bringing back the news…

    .!.

    Lots of stuff today :)

Anyway, I don’t know if you already noticed. Some of you might, probably. The RSS feeds in your links section is probably already working again.
Not that they didn’t work really, but let’s say that they have been improved. Or rather, the downloading and update of your RSS/Atom/Whatever feeds is a bit more reliable now. There’s still some problems, but for sure I know my feeds The Producers movie full never worked and now they do! For a bit less boring feeds, go look at these or these, or you can suggest some or your own.

So, yes, you can use MyOpera as a feed-reader!
Not really wonderful, but… it should work now. Maybe you will have to wait 2-3 days for our feed spider to catch up…

  • And the winner is…

As we said yesterday, we found out the reason the site was so slow last weekend, and some parts of Monday.
And the reason was that we got kindly hammered by some proxy servers that seem to be located in Vietnam,
requesting lots of “fake”, as in “non existing” pages, always referring to the same user (that was already banned, don’t know when).

These strange requests were referred to this user’s blog, but they were totally fake, containing unusually long paths and as far as we know, they always resulted in the “banned user” page (or timeouts/proxy errors).

When we found this, we just temporarily disallowed requests having that strange pattern, and, voila’, everything was working again.
They could be denial of service attacks (?), or just fake traffic thrown at us for some reason… who knows?

Anyway, we’re at work now to implement a “throttling” mechanism

The Ring Two film , that will hopefully help stopping these strange guys from harming the site while improving overall stability of MyOpera. We’re growing up… :)

  • A note about the leaked build

To those who have chosen to download and install the Opera Mobile 9.5 build that leaked on to the internet, please note the following:

This is a pre-alpha version, and does not in any way reflect the quality of an official Opera release. It can cause data loss, harm your mobile device and accidentally kill your cat and love life. Don’t complain to us when this happens.Mission: Impossible IIHamlet rip Freaky Friday video

  • Its been a month…

Hello everyone. I’m Siddhartha, the new intern at the Opera India Office. And I just felt this need to give you a more personal insight into the Opera India gang.

Well, the month started with Vivek on a mission to save the world in 4 mins. The Madonna bug had got us all… But we (he mostly) did conquer it, only to realise our friendly neighbourhood pappu Finding Forrester move The Code Conspiracy film Piñero trailer … hadn’t figured out how to dance. And well… nothing much has changed in that department since. I promise i will keep you updated.

Well, moving on, Jaswinder is all set to go the Yankee way. And all of us here have our own evil interests of getting goodies smuggled out of the states through him.

Anil, rock solid on his Enfield, just narrated to us the other day, the story of his “Roadies” audition few years back… well… the details are too gory to write about here… all i can say is, the day didnt go well for one unnamed, flamboyant gentleman… And Anil of course had the last laugh. So, next time you feel like spamming him… give it a second thought. (Issued in public interest!!)

We have all begun to have doubts that Hari has a dual personality. He is Hari by the day… and a bug fighting Super hero by the night. Who never sleeps… never takes a break. Just crunches through software bugs, and makes the net a safer place for all of us. He is seldom seen outside his QA realm, though our sources have confirmed he has been humming the latest bollywood numbers recently. Do we have a story here?? We will have to wait for this one.

Sagar, is a famous man now. The Norwegian national paper, DN, published his interview, on the growing Opera usage in India. Well, looking smart is the least we can say about the footage. For those of you who can read Norwegian, here’s the article The Odd Couple buy

and the interview video. And for others, we have the Google translator after all (English translation).

Well, as for Arvind, he has been mysteriously getting better at Ricochet Robots, by the day. And no matter how much he tried, I still haven’t figured out how to get the robots bouncing the right way. I’m still trying to find a rule that says, interns are supposed to suck at the game.

And about me, my first office experience has been amazing. Though it’s like spoiling the kid, because I wonder any other office anywhere is going to be this professional and this unpretentious at the same time. For the first time in my life, people around me are cracking technology jokes I don’t get. Damn!! We in college still got a long way to go.

Long hours have been spent into intensively planning the next team trip. To a secret fun destination. 100 points to anyone who can guess the right place. Please leave the answer in the comments, and we will get back to you with our detailed points calculation table. Not to let you down, I currently have 10 gazillion points and will soon catch up with board leaders Navjot and Shwetank, who have been in Oslo a long time. We miss you guys!!

And I of course cannot miss out on the latest addition to our team. The Opera Kestrel 9.5. The latest offering from the Opera armoury, has been a much discussed about member of our team. Wish all software was equally beautifully engineered…

This brings us to an end of this episode of Opera.in news… Will BRB….

  • Campus placements, IIIT-Allahabad

Opera recently visited the campus of IIIT Allahabad to conduct tests and interviews, in the hope of finding great talent. And boy did we find talent!

So much infact, that it was very hard for Snorre

    The Man from Earth dvdrip
On August 13, more than 120 students participated in Opera’s two rounds of quizzes. The final select few were interviewed until well over midnight and some more during the wee hours of the morning.

Starting January 2009, we will host 6 new employees in the Web Applications team of the India office. They will create widgets (and other secret stuff :ninja: ) for the benefit of millions among Opera’s community and web browser user base. They will help in strengthening Opera’s leadership in producing cross platform widgets that can work on any device.

    A few final bugs…

Some things in life don’t go according to plan — at least not in software development. We knew when we announced a release date before we finished development that a showstopper bug might be found that could alter the actual date we release the beta.

As you can imagine, we encountered a few bugs last week that we needed to fix before we launch. Our engineering team worked through the weekend to fix the bugs. Even though our release is a beta, we’d rather spend the extra time to fix them, thus giving you a better experience. The fixes are almost complete now, but we need two more days to run the build through our quality assurance testing. The new launch date is now set for the 17th.

We’re disappointed to delay, but fixing these bugs will improve the experience with our beta and let you fully test the browser.
