Opera Make Your Browser Fly

Big day at the Opera! We are launching Opera Mobile 11 for Android and Symbian/S60. Download now direct to your device from m.opera.com, or get it in the Android Market.

Heads up to current users: Tap to zoom has been changed from single-click to double-click. You can now click links and activate Flash content in overview mode, without having to zoom in first (yes, that’s right, the Android version now supports Flash).

So what else is new? A lot: …

  • In this day of releases, we are also launching "labs" versions of Opera Mobile 11 for Maemo, MeeGo and Windows platforms (that’s desktop Windows, as in tablets and other devices with touch screens, not Windows Phone 7).

The product is the same as the version for Android and Symbian also launched today. See the product pages for more information.

    "Labs" status means:

    • Less extensive testing and more known issues
    • Less platform integration
    • No guarantee that there will be any further releases for the platform

That said, we humbly believe they are all still big improvements over any other browser alternative for these platforms :). So if you have one of those devices, head over to labs.opera.com for more information and downloads.

  • Those of you who have followed Opera Software for a while know that we pride ourselves on making the browser run with as little system resources as possible. Opera Mini runs on over 3000 phones. And Opera Mobile, with its responsiveness and smooth operation, really shines when running on the most basic Android handsets.

But one of the requests we got for the 10.1 beta was to make it smaller. Opera Mobile for Android currently takes 20.7MB + cache. That’s only the equivalent of 5-6 MP3 songs. But for some of you with older devices and Android 2.1 or earlier (where apps can not be moved to memory card), space is a limited resource.

The actual size of Opera Mobile
The size varies from operating system to operating system (mainly due to different compilers). On Symbian, Opera Mobile is a lightweight 7MB. On Android, the total size of the components Opera needs to run are approx 10.5MB.

10.5MB you say? How did that turn into 20.7MB? …
