Opera Make Your Browser Fly

Welcome to Rest Assured

Welcome to "Rest Assured", quality rants by Opera's Quality Assurance department.

My name is Snorre M. Grimsby, and I am the head of Opera's QA department. We would like to tell the world more about what testers and QA engineers at Opera do, and also discuss more general quality assurance issues. Therefore, posts on this blog will relate less to specific Opera products and technologies (and/or the testing of them). In other words, this is not the place to report bugs.

So, who are we?

Today, we have people in seven of Opera's offices, organized in five sub-departments to align with our development lifecycle. We are responsible for testing and assuring the quality of all Opera deliveries and technologies, from Core versions to end-user and business products.

What is testing?

Redline divx
Internally, we use this definition of testing:
Testing
Activities, including development of test-supporting tools and systems, that directly or indirectly examine, observe, or evaluate (without access to the source code) the state (for example quality, usability, operability, compatibility, accessibility) of features and functions in the Opera browser.

Manderlay movies
Activities that fall under the definition would be
  • Planning and managing testing of products
  • Writing, reviewing, and running test suites
  • Web compatibility and interoperability verification
  • Tracking, analysis, and assignment of all reported defects

We also develop, deploy, maintain, and administrate testing infrastructures, tools, and systems.

Beyond testing

We often say that [t]he object of good testing is to find as many bugs as possible, and that [t]he object of good quality assurance is to find as few bugs as possible. What we mean by that, of course, is that testing is about detection and that quality assurance is about prevention. Work on process improvements (SPI), therefore, also falls under our QA department.

But our responsibilities actually go beyond testing and quality assurance:

  • Reading, reviewing, and writing specifications
  • Setting up non-testing infrastructures and systems (e.g. guidelines)
  • Internal, customer, and public technical and non-technical documentation
  • End-user and customer support and community interaction
  • Product localization

If you have an interest in Web technologies, software testing, and/or quality assurance, we hope that you will find this a blog worth subscribing to.

  • We are proud to announce the beta release of Opera Mini 4.1. You can download it from http://www.operamini.com/beta

Here are the new features added since Opera Mini 4.0:
    • Download and upload files directly in Opera Mini
    • Save pages for offline browsing
    • Autocompletion when entering addresses directly
    • Find in page
    • Increased server speed during the last months
    • Signed versions of Opera Mini

Please be aware that the first two features require JSR-75 support on your handset. Far from all handset support this, and it can also be turned on/off in the JVM or by the service provider.

We have now chosen to sign Opera Mini with Verisign and Thawte, and we will provide four different versions on our download server: Double signed (both Verisign and Thawte), Verisign, Thawte, and unsigned. The advantage of the signed version is that you can change permission settings to less restrictive permissions. The end result is that you will get fewer permission dialogs for e.g., file and network access.

We encourage you all to try the signed versions first, unless you have Palm OS or BlackBerry, and if none of them work on your phone, download the unsigned version. By trying to start a signed version, your phone will send some useful feedback to our servers which we will use later.

We hope you all enjoy this beta as much as us, and that you will provide feedback in our forum or directly in our feedback thread. :)

    Known issues

As this is a beta, there are bound to be some known issues. Here’s a list of some:

    • There are problems with entering address directly on some phones. If you experience this problem, please go to settings and disable “Direct address input”.
    • Palm OS and BlackBerry can’t use Opera Mini with certificates.
    • BlackBerry devices with firmware older than 4.2 can’t start this beta version. The firmware can be found in “Options -> About” on line #3.
    • Direct image download doesn’t work, but will open in your native browser.

    What is JSR-75?

JSR-75 is an optional package for J2ME (this is very technical, meaning it can be included in the Java on your phone) which allows Opera Mini to access the file system on your phone. By accessing the file system, Opera Mini can download and upload files without going through the phone’s native browser. JSR-75 is also used when saving pages.

  • BarCamp Mumbai 3

    Flashdance on dvd Bella psp

So I was at the Chandigarh Airport to catch a flight to Mumbai and got my boarding pass, when I realized that I had forgot my cell phone at home  . But I had Wi-Fi there, and I twittered it immediately :D .

Fortunately, I did not miss my cell phone at all, as Barcamp Mumbai 3 was a rocking event. The event had a huge turnout, but more than that, I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the participants. Huge props to the organizers and the guys and girls at IIT-Bombay’s SJMSOM for the great event.

All kinds of people showed up, right from B-school students, to veteran entrepreneurs to hard core techies with years of experience. Also, it was heartening to see many first timers. Some of them did not work in the tech industry, but still came. And because of the eclectic mix of all these people, we had a great time sharing ideas, which was especially evident in the Firetalks which took place.

Navjot also presented there, and you can check out his presentation right here Made of Honor psp .

Hope to see you again soon, Mumbai!

  • Good news, Everyone!

    the opera bunch

We’re ready to announce one of the biggest changes Hamlet trailer to our community since its launch in 2001. We are really committed to our work, and there’s nothing greater to see new members joining or existing ones logging in!

But… There’s a catch to it all. As most of you know, developing Web sites today is time-consuming, and in order to maintain My Opera we’re forced to think of all different kinds of contexts when we create something new (or fix something old). So, Nicolas, Edoardo, Esteban, and I (together with front-end guys Fred and the new kid in town, Tristan) have decided that it only makes sense to continue development exclusively for Microsoft IE6 (according to our stats, the majority of our users are IE-followers).

    The Red Baron the movie

Yeah, yeah, we know… We are the Opera community, but, boo-hoo-on-you!

There’s simply too much work to support all those browsers along with their interpretation of “standards“.

We can safely announce that starting today, a new era will arise.

If you think this is good, then help us digg it!

  • Opera Mini 4 leaving beta soon

With three beta releases under our belts, hopefully it won’t be too much longer before we roll out our shiny new Opera Mini 4.

We’ve gotten lots of great feedback from many of you, which enabled us to make Opera Mini 4 the quality browser that it is today.

Thanks to all of you who helped with the testing. In particular, we’d like to thank those of you who submitted bug reports or gave us feedback in the Opera Mini Forums (and on your blogs too). Thanks for helping us bring Opera Mini out to millions of people.

At this point we are quite busy putting in some final improvements and touch ups to the new version, and we’re looking forward to bringing you Opera Mini 4 final soon.

  • Optimizing for speed, phase 1

    high performance web sites

I’ve spend the last few days optimizing My Opera for faster loading, using the 14 rules from Steve Souders (Yahoo!) excellent book High Performance Web Sites.

I saw Nate Koechley from Yahoo! present these rules at a Web conference in London a long time ago and I’ve wanted to implement them since then, but I had not got around to it until earlier this week when Sverre got the book and put it on my desk. :)

There’s much that can be done to speed up My Opera. We have done a few things already, such as moving all scripts to the bottom of the page, and we aim to do a lot more in the future.

The Hills Have Eyes II ipod

For this My Opera update I’ve decided to focus on getting fewer HTTP requests and smaller files sizes for the My Opera ui.

If we take a closer look at the images that are used for the My Opera ui today we can see that it’s 27 images (depending on what page you look at) with a total file size of 71,3 KB robbie williams intensive care mp3 . That’s the backgrounds for the main layout, the logo, menu, icons for the top bar, tabs for sub menus, etc (I’m only including the images that are used for the ui, not the ones in the page content).

The challenge with optimizing this is that the ui for the upcoming My Opera release will contain even more icons than before, because of the drop down menus, and we still needed to make it smaller.

So, how do you think it went?

Quite well actually. The result for the new site is 8 images and 21,8 KB! :)

There is of course a lot more that can be done, and we will continue working on this.

Stay tuned for more posts on this topic.
