Opera Mini 4.2 beta now available for download in Android Market. In April we told you we were working on an Opera Mini version for Android. At that time you could download a technical preview and try for yourself. Now, as the device has hit the stores, we have been able to improve it even more.
As this is a beta, we know there are issues, and we can't promise that the final version will be just like this. But, we would very much like your feedback on this Android project. If you find any bugs, please report them, either through the phone, or by going to the bug report wizard.
We are proud to announce the release of Opera Mini 4.2. You can download it from http://mini.opera.comFirst of all, we would like to thank all of you who participated in the beta testing. Great job!
We hope you all enjoy this release as much as us, and that you will provide feedback in our forum. Bugs can be reported directly from Opera Mini (Menu -> Tools-> Help -> Bug report) or via our bug wizard.

Do you want to contribute site patches to Opera's browser.js file and help make difficult websites work in Opera? Well, now you can! It's not hard if you know a bit of JavaScript and like looking under the hood of a web site to figure out what is going on.
If you have analyzed a website and want to contribute a script, here is how: File a bug report from https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/ and include the following information:
Step-by-step description of how to find the problem
Quoted snippets of website code that contribute to the error
Links to CSS or JS files that contain the problematic code - it's very important that we know exactly where the issue is.
Tell us how important you think the site and the problem is
Include a user script that solves the problem fully or partially
If it is the site's fault, mention whether you have contacted the site and asked them to fix it - if you know contact details please add them.
Herbie Fully Loaded the movie In the "Brief summary" box, start the text with the word [SITEFIX] (include the brackets).
You will receive feedback on the script and confirmation of whether it will be accepted and released in the browser.js file.
I'm proud to announce a project that has been in the works in Opera's QA group
for quite some time. It is a tool called MAMA (Metadata Analysis and Mining
Application). MAMA was created to help us improve Opera by finding real world
sites that we could test with. MAMA allows us to find any combination of CSS,
Script and markup factors that we desire. In a sense, it is a search engine
for Web page structures instead of content.
MAMA has been tremendously helpful in testing Opera and measuring the popularity
of technologies both new and old. One of MAMA's strengths is correlation between
different issues. Want to find examples of a "tty" CSS media type that also use
the "@import" syntax? Fine. Documents that have over 1,000 inline images or
XML documents that use both Flash and external CSS? MAMA can find them.
We know that MAMA is useful, but we think it will be very useful to others too:
Browser manufacturers and others can use MAMA data on the popularity of
widely used technologies to prioritize bugs and justify adding support
for new technology to in-progress releases.
Standards bodies can use the data to measure the success and adoption
rates of various technologies.
Web developers can use the same data to justify support of various
technologies in their work.
It can provide real-world, practical samples of the Web developer's
"art", for inspiration and instruction.
MAMA has a side effect that is also one of its most beneficial features:
it gives Web authors a voice to the browser and standards makers
by documenting actual practice.
...And this is just the initial phase! In the coming weeks, a number of other
articles about MAMA's findings and statistics on other Web page topics
will be released. Our eventual goal is to make an interface to the MAMA
data directly available at some point, but that availability will be
phased in gradually when it is ready. For now, these statistics are a
way to gauge and generate interest. These articles should also help spur
a dialog in guiding MAMA's future collection goals - I find that the more
feature requests MAMA gets, the more it improves.
We are proud to announce the beta release of Opera Mini 4.2. You can download it from http://mini.opera.com/betaOpera Mini 4.2 beta will be installed next to your other Opera Mini version(s), so there's no need to delete anything before downloading the beta.
Here are the new features added since Opera Mini 4.1:
Some of the new languages are not fully translated for the beta, but will be fully supported for the final version.
There are several issues with notes in Opera Link. Your device may not support viewing or editing of very large notes. Backup your notes before trying!
What is RTSP
RTSPHenry Poole Is Here rip is a protocol used for streaming media, such as videos. If your phone supports RTSP via Opera Mini, you should be able to play e.g. YouTube videos on your phone. These will not be played in Opera Mini, but by the media software in the device. We would like to remind those of you without a fixed data subscription that streaming media requires a lot of data traffic, and can be very expensive. Depending on the device, you may have to configure a new access point before streaming works. Also, some devices will not do streaming unless they are connected via WiFi (we have seen this on BlackBerry).
Now we will do our best to finish the final release for you. Enjoy the beta! :)
Today we released a very small upgrade of Opera Mini 4.2. If you don't have a BlackBerry device, or a Nokia 5800, there is no need to upgrade your Opera Mini.
You might have heard that Opera Mini is pre-installed on all Fly java phones in India. In doing so, we’ve made two new Opera Mini users, the sizzling Malaika Arora, and a new star of Indian cricket, fast and flitting, Ishant Sharma. This is what Ishant had to say - “Browsing the Web is so simple and fun. I get the latest sports news, movie times, Bollywood information, access to my e-mail — all on the go.”
We just released build 4.1.11355 of Opera Mini. If you don’t use Palm or BlackBerry, you don’t really have to update.
What have we fixed?
BlackBerry devices should now be able to only use Wi-Fi (also at installation).
BlackBerry users can try BIS. We can’t guarantee that it’s working, but it works on one of our two different service providers.
Palm devices now get better memory handling, which means that they should get more images. This is a hugh improvement over the last build, and hopefully it will be similar to the beta, in the eyes of Palm users.
A user told us about a bug while adding bookmarks. Most of you have probably not seen it due to the strange reproduction path, but it’s fixed. Thanks to some guy using Yahoo mail in Argentina - you probably know who you are!
PS: For Palm users, we recommend these settings in prefs: Use Double Buffering - on Use high resolution coordinates - on Set Memory Maximum: 1Mb Set Maximum Java Thread Stack Size: 32kb
Spice Mobiles has been pre-installing your favorite mobile web browser, Opera Mini, on all of its Java enabled phones. They recently aired this commercial with the Opera Mini logo.
